Paul Scharf was born in Zurich, Switzerland.
Violin and piano lessons: Studied violin in Zurich, Basel (Primoz Novsak) and Bern (master class Igor Ozim). Further studies and master classes with Tibor Varga, Ana Chumachenko and Yfrah Neaman (London). Paul Scharf is playing over many years in different String-Quartets (Salzburg Festival, Davos Music Festival, Festival de Radio France etc.); getting important impulses from Walter Levin and György Kurtag.
Sponsorship award from the state capital of Salzburg as part of the Salzburg Festival. Paul Scharf is guest (1st violin) at the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, he played under Lorin Maazel, Wolfgang Sawallisch and many others. Paul Scharf was a member of the St. Gallen Symphony Orchestra (1st violin). Later he gave up his position in the orchestra to devote more time to chamber music; among others as first violinist of the Camerata Bern, in collaboration with personalities such as Heinz Holliger, Ana Chumachenko, Erich Höbarth, Andras Schiff, Leonidas Kavakos and many others. Appearances in many concert halls and festivals throughout Europe, Asia, South America and the USA.
Solo performances with the Zurich Chamber Orchestra and the Camerata Bern, among others. Paul Scharf plays as concertmaster in orchestral projects in Switzerland and is a member of the Swiss Octet, for which he also wrote over 30 arrangements that are performed throughout Switzerland and Europe. The latest CD “Lebensstürme” with Schubert arrangements by Paul Scharf was released on the Novalis label.
Since 2007 he is working as a professor of the Zurich MKZ Conservatory. By accompanying his students on the piano, Paul Scharf helps them to develop their musicality very early on. His students are very well developed at a high musical level from an early age and win important national competitions. Paul Scharf has been a highly valued teacher for many years; he has given numerous violin courses in Switzerland, most recently at the Talis Festival in Sarajevo, to young musicians from all over the world.
Paul Scharf is playing a violin by Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume from 1851, numbered 1968.
